Functional Safety in the Automotive Sector – Process and System Certification

In modern automotive engineering, electrical and electronic systems play a critical role. With the increasing integration of driver assistance systems and artificial intelligence (AI), the complexity of these systems rises, leading to higher functional safety requirements. The key standards for functional safety in the automotive sector are:

  • ISO 26262 – Functional Safety
ISO 26262 is an internationally recognized standard that defines requirements for functional safety of electrical and electronic systems in production vehicles. It covers the entire product lifecycle – from development and production to decommissioning – and includes the classification of Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL) to assess risk.

  • ISO 21448 – Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF)
ISO 21448 complements ISO 26262 by addressing risks that do not arise from technical malfunctions but from insufficient system performance or foreseeable misuse. This is particularly relevant for driver assistance systems and semi-automated vehicle functions.

  • ISO/PAS 8800 – Safety of AI Systems in Vehicles
ISO/PAS 8800 defines requirements for the safe use of AI in safety-critical vehicle systems. It addresses risks such as unpredictable system behavior due to data uncertainties or algorithmic decisions, and builds on the principles of ISO 26262 and ISO 21448.

Purpose of Certification

Certification of functional safety processes and systems provides an objective demonstration that defined processes and systems comply with the applicable standards. It enables organizations to transparently demonstrate the conformity of their development and safety processes through an independent third-party assessment.

Our Services

Our activities are strictly limited to independent certification services and include:

  • Certification Audits
Planning and conducting audits to assess the conformity of processes, development projects, or vehicle components with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and ISO/PAS 8800.

  • Evaluation and Certification Decision
Review of audit results and independent decision regarding the issuance of the certificate.

  • Certificate Issuance and Surveillance
Issuance of certificates confirming compliance and conducting surveillance and recertification audits in accordance with defined schedules and accreditation requirements.

Note: Consulting, support, or training services to implement or adapt standard requirements are not part of our activities as a certification body.

Information for Interested Parties
